STD DIAGNOSIS GUIDE
How does STD diagnosis work in Dubai?
Assessment starts with a conversation, examination when needed and suitable samples. Results then inform a diagnosis and follow-up plan.

What should I bring to the appointment?
- Dates, type and sites of exposure, including any later exposure.
- When symptoms began and how they changed, even if they stopped.
- Previous reports and recent medicines, including antibiotics, PEP or PrEP.
- Possible pregnancy, allergies and relevant medical conditions.
Will I need an examination?
This depends on your symptoms. Ask what the examination involves and consent before it starts. You can request a chaperone or stop the examination.
A sore or rash may need direct assessment. Home sample collection does not replace an examination when one is clinically indicated.

Why do sample sites matter?
Urine or a vaginal swab may be used for some infections, and blood for others. Oral or anal exposure may require a sample from that site; a urine test does not test the throat or rectum.
What should be agreed before you leave?
- Names of the tests, specimens and total charges.
- Expected result timing and a suitable contact method.
- Whether treatment is needed before all results return—a clinical decision.
- Review or repeat-testing dates and precautions while waiting.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Clear answers before your next step.
Does an everything STD panel always include herpes?
No. Ask for a written infection, test and specimen list rather than relying on the word everything. Herpes may not be included, and routine herpes blood screening is not recommended for every symptom-free person because of test limitations and possible false-positive results. Mention any sores or symptoms so a clinician can discuss the appropriate test and sample.
