STD DIAGNOSIS GUIDE
Understanding STD test results and next steps
Negative, positive and inconclusive results need interpretation alongside the test method, timing, specimen and clinical history.

What does a negative result mean?
The target was not detected by that method in that sample. This does not cover infections not tested for, sites not sampled, or later exposures.
If testing was early or symptoms continue, discuss reassessment and repeat timing rather than assuming the problem is resolved.
Is a positive screening result final?
What if a result is inconclusive?
A repeat specimen or a different test may be needed. Ask why, when, about charges and what precautions apply meanwhile; do not interpret it as negative or positive yourself.

What happens after a diagnosis?
- Prescribed treatment, schedule and side effects that warrant contact.
- Advice on partner notification, testing or treatment.
- When sexual contact can resume for the specific infection and treatment.
- Whether a test of cure or later screening for reinfection is needed.

Questions people ask
Clear answers before your next step.
Why might two STD test reports disagree?
The reports may not test the same infection with the same method, specimen or timing. A screening result may also require confirmation. Take both complete reports, exposure dates and medication details to a licensed clinician to agree whether confirmation or repeat testing is needed. Do not choose the preferred result or start leftover medicine yourself.
