Practical questions
Gonorrhea culture and susceptibility are not a NAAT result
A gonorrhea NAAT, a culture and an antibiotic-susceptibility test provide different information. A positive molecular result does not automatically contain a resistance profile. When further investigation is advised, ask which method is being requested and why rather than assuming another sample simply repeats the same test.

Distinguish detection from growth and susceptibility
A NAAT looks for the organism’s genetic material. Culture attempts to grow viable organisms; when growth is available, susceptibility testing can assess their response to selected antibiotics. These steps are not synonyms for a positive or negative panel result. CDC advises culture and susceptibility investigation in suspected treatment failure because a routine NAAT cannot supply antimicrobial-susceptibility results. The clinical team must interpret the methods alongside symptoms and exposure history.
Help the team obtain the intended specimen
Culture has specific collection and transport requirements. Tell the service about recent antibiotics and the affected or exposed sites before collection; the correct site and method matter. Do not reuse a home molecular-test kit for a culture request or assume that storing a specimen as you did previously is suitable. Ask the laboratory for the actual instructions rather than applying a universal medicine-free interval, temperature or transport deadline found online.
Interpret a no-growth or resistance report carefully
Failure to grow an organism does not automatically cancel a previous molecular finding; specimen conditions and prior treatment can affect recovery. Conversely, persistent symptoms do not prove antibiotic resistance. Ask who reviews conflicting reports and whether another sample, assessment for reinfection or another diagnosis is needed. Do not select medicine from a susceptibility table yourself. New fever, significant pelvic pain or testicular swelling requires medical assessment rather than waiting only for a laboratory clarification.
Common questions
Does a positive NAAT prove resistance?
No. Detection alone is not an antimicrobial-susceptibility result.
Can I use any swab kit for a culture?
No. Confirm the required specimen and transport system with the laboratory.
Does no growth always disprove the earlier result?
No. Ask for joint clinical interpretation of method, site and prior treatment.
