Practical questions

A cervical screening sample is not a complete STI test

A cervical screening appointment is designed to assess cervical cancer-related risk, not to certify that every STI has been excluded. A sample taken from the cervix does not mean every possible infection assay was ordered. Check the actual screening method and the separately requested tests before relying on the result.

Find out what the screening report describes

Depending on the screening pathway, the report may describe high-risk HPV testing and assessment of cervical cell changes. Those findings answer a different question from a chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV or syphilis test. Ask which method was used and what any follow-up recommendation means. Do not transfer another country’s screening ages or intervals to your own care without checking the locally applicable clinical plan and your previous history.

Keep symptoms and exposure questions separate

A reassuring screening result does not explain pelvic pain, unusual discharge, bleeding after sex or a new genital lesion. Tell the clinician about those symptoms and any relevant exposure even if screening was recent. Symptoms may need examination and infection-specific specimens rather than another screening appointment. Likewise, an abnormal screening result is not proof of recent infidelity or a complete diagnosis of cancer; obtain the report-specific explanation and recommended review.

Confirm the contents of a combined appointment

If cervical screening and STI testing are discussed in the same visit, ask for the names of both orders and how each result will be delivered. One collected sample does not establish that all organisms or exposed sites were assessed. Keep the screening follow-up and any STI result follow-up on separate, clear lists. Do not postpone assessment of new symptoms until the next routine screening date merely because the previous report was normal.

Common questions

Does a normal cervical screen exclude HIV or syphilis?

No. Those require their own appropriately selected tests.

Does the same appointment guarantee combined STI testing?

No. Confirm the named orders and specimens with the service.

Should bleeding after sex wait for routine screening?

Seek clinical assessment of the symptom rather than treating screening as its diagnostic substitute.
