Practical questions

A rejected STI sample is not a negative result

“Rejected”, “insufficient” and “not processed” do not mean that an STI test was negative. They mean the laboratory could not issue the intended result from that specimen. The next step is to understand the reason and arrange appropriate recollection, not to treat the missing result as reassurance.

Ask for the actual rejection reason

Possible issues include identification mismatch, an unsuitable or expired container, leakage, insufficient material or handling outside the laboratory’s requirements. Ask which issue occurred and which test was affected. Do not assume that every part of a multi-sample panel failed; blood and swab specimens may have different processing outcomes.

Use the replacement kit’s own instructions

Collection media and instructions vary by test platform and specimen site. Follow the supplied written directions and ask if anything is unclear before collecting again. Do not transfer a sample into a household container, reuse an old swab or copy a volume and storage time from a different laboratory website.

Clarify the clinical timing as well as collection

Ask whether recollection should happen promptly or whether the exposure timing requires a particular testing plan. Tell the clinician about symptoms and antibiotics taken since the first collection. A laboratory transport deadline and a diagnostic window period are different concepts; meeting one does not automatically satisfy the other.

Confirm ownership of the missing result

Ask who orders the replacement, whether there is a new fee and who will explain the result. Keep the rejection notice and the revised plan. If symptoms worsen or urgent exposure advice is needed, seek care rather than waiting for the collection issue to be resolved; specimen administration should not delay clinical assessment.

Common questions

Does “not processed” mean no infection was found?

No. It means the intended test did not produce an interpretable result from that sample.

Can I reuse the same container for a repeat?

Use the replacement collection materials and instructions supplied by the testing service; do not improvise.

Will every sample in my panel need repeating?

Not necessarily. Ask which specimens or tests were affected and which results remain valid.
