Practical questions
Hepatitis C antibody and RNA answer different questions
A reactive hepatitis C antibody result does not, by itself, establish that virus is currently detectable. An HCV RNA test answers that different question. Before reacting to a positive flag, check which test was performed and whether the follow-on RNA result is available or still needs arranging.

Separate exposure from current detectable virus
Antibody testing records the immune response to exposure. Antibodies can remain after infection has cleared, including after successful treatment. RNA testing looks for the virus’s genetic material and helps establish current infection. A result labelled antibody positive should therefore not be described to a partner as a confirmed current viral load. Ask the responsible clinician to explain the paired findings rather than treating the two test names as synonyms.
Check the follow-on testing process
Some services arrange RNA testing after a reactive antibody result, but do not assume your particular order includes automatic follow-on testing. Ask whether the same sample can be used, whether another appointment is needed and who will contact you. Recent exposure and immune-related conditions can change the testing approach. Give the actual exposure date and prior treatment history; a negative antibody result obtained too early may not settle the current clinical question.
Use the result for care, not relationship dating
A clinician should explain whether current infection is confirmed, excluded for the assessed circumstances or still uncertain. A positive antibody result cannot reliably date acquisition, and previous clearance does not provide a reason to ignore a new exposure. If RNA is detected, arrange clinical review rather than buying treatment or assuming that feeling well means the liver is unaffected. Keep both reports together for any future transfer of care.
Common questions
Does a reactive antibody always mean current infection?
No. An RNA result and clinical interpretation are needed to answer that question.
Can antibodies remain after successful treatment?
Yes. A later antibody-positive result alone does not prove treatment failure.
Is follow-on RNA automatically included everywhere?
Do not assume so; confirm the order, process and result owner with the service.
Sources and information limits
Sources support general medical principles, not the UAE booking policies or service availability. Confirm instructions and local arrangements with the care provider. The update date does not claim clinician review.
Content policy and review statusQuestions before arranging an appointment?
Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
