Practical questions
Hepatitis B: surface antigen and antibodies differ
A hepatitis B report may contain surface antigen, surface antibody and core antibody results. These are not interchangeable versions of one test. Read the named markers together with vaccination records, previous results and the reason for testing; a single highlighted word cannot safely explain the whole pattern.
General information for adults. Not a substitute for medical assessment.

Identify the three different markers
HBsAg looks for a surface protein of the virus. Anti-HBs is an antibody associated with vaccination or recovery, depending on the wider pattern. Total anti-HBc reflects contact with the actual virus rather than vaccination alone. Ask whether all three were measured and bring the complete report, not a cropped screenshot that removes the assay name, date or another marker needed for interpretation.
Explain vaccination and prior results
Tell the clinician about recent hepatitis B vaccination, earlier positive results, immune-suppressing treatment and possible exposure dates. Some patterns have more than one explanation; an isolated core-antibody result is not a simple verdict about current infection or protection. A clinician may request confirmation or additional tests. Do not decide that you are infectious, immune or in need of a particular medicine by matching a partial report to an online table.
Turn the interpretation into a documented plan
Ask which conclusion is established, what remains uncertain and who arranges any liver assessment, vaccination advice or repeat testing. Pregnancy should be mentioned promptly because maternal and infant prevention planning may be needed; the maternal result does not by itself diagnose the baby. Keep the interpreted report for future care so that a later clinician does not mistake an old antibody finding for a newly acquired infection.
Common questions
Is anti-HBs the same as HBsAg?
No. One is an antibody marker and the other is a viral surface-antigen marker.
Does vaccination alone produce core antibodies?
No. Discuss a core-antibody finding with the clinician in its complete test pattern.
Can I interpret an isolated highlighted result?
Do not rely on it alone; provide the complete report, dates and clinical history.
Sources and information limits
Sources support general medical principles, not the UAE booking policies or service availability. Confirm instructions and local arrangements with the care provider. The update date does not claim clinician review.
Content policy and review statusQuestions before arranging an appointment?
Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
